Composer and musician 009 Night talks shop about creating audio for games

I had the pleasure of scoring and sound designing for two games during TheXPlace Summer Game Jam in 2024. Here’s a bit about each one.

UNEASY TRAVEL
I love scoring for horror games, tv, and films! Scoring “It’s Coming” was chill and it was nice working with a great team to create Uneasy Travel, a survival horror game. Non-linear scoring is such a fun challenge and I approach it differently ever time. I began this piece with base layers of synths and gave the team additional stems for layers to add as the game gets more difficult. This creates dynamic music that adapts to the game state and becames more tense as the game progresses.

CROW’S CALLING
Scoring “Nesting” for Crow’s Calling, a cozy story driven adventure game, was a treat and allowed me to get cute with my instrumentation and orchestration. I drew upon my knowledge of classical music and paired it with my enjoyment of playing multiple instruments. I began by scoring this in Sibelius, exported the MIDI xml file, and imported it into a Logic project. From there I orchestrated the music and produced the mockup. Then I recorded and produced the guitar and vocals. Later on I recorded the percussion and stacked it on marimba and glockenspiel. Upon completion of the demo game with music I presented the project at the Summer Immersive for Technology and Applied Composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music to aspiring game composers, and it was a pleasure to share my insights on composition and music production for non-linear audio.
